Must Have Been Something, Though Nothing Was Said

Must Have Been Something, Though Nothing Was Said

A Poem by Chris Shaw

so much for carrying
a moral compass when
its magnetic direction
goes awol

there we were seated
many moons ago
facing one another
in a restaurant
under daylight's
sharp eyes

our conversation
like a spring fountain
in happy go lucky flow
bubbled gushed
and sparkled

time a small word
in an unnecessary dictionary
our company a fine
full bodied red
settled at room
temperature

must have been something
our eyes locked on
my heart a target
took a missile hit
blip blip blip
skipped a bloody beat

whoa what was that
how unexpected
hope he didn't detect
the change in
magnetic field

heightened tension
nothing mentioned
briefly held in a
dopamine gaze

both shy as church mice
keeping the discourse
delightfully polite
ever so nice
yet the stars aligned
that day
though nothing was said

A lovely read Chris.... Sometimes when in the heat of things, something in you inner place, your inner spirit goes awry.... and nothing is said, but the feelings the passion somehow fades, for whatever reason... no words, just the know how... the sense that something has changed... no words needed... you just know something is different.
Best, B

What a delightful poem. There is no greater sensation the first attraction between two people.

So much can be so little said, so little (that making sense?). I like this.

Yeah, that moral compass often lies anyways; every time mine tries to kill me, I punch out. Verse four and seven are fantastic, the allusion to your company being a full bodied red wine stopped me, but what really got me was the dopamine gaze on seven… powerful. If this is autobiographical, I hope it went well; I enjoyed reading about it.

Such an enjoyable read dear Chris. Sometimes things are said in innocence yet taken as an affront and.....sometimes things are said deliberately with a show of innocence. I know that feeling when the heart skips and we try not to show a change in the magnetic field. You have shared so much with these words. Great lines! Very nice write! Temp

Many thanks Temp for your encouraging review. All the best.

What an interesting poem in a delightful sort of way. Sometimes conformity goes out the window with emotion rushing in. That can send the "moral compass" spiraling. You've some wonderful phraseology here. I enjoyed the read.

Thanks for that share Fabian. Pleased you enjoyed
nothing said, an opportunity passed by...both people feeling it, but not expressing it.
Oh, what could have been...if just one would have taken the first step.
"time a small word/ in an unnecessary dictionary"
I wish I had written those lines.

Chris, your poems are like movie moments for me. A complete scene with love, pain, and everything in between.
