the sunlight in my garden
blinked and switched off cold
what happened to those leaves of birch
that flaunted all that gold
cast they are in shadow lands
and thankful for the rest
too much attention doesn’t pay

Yes Chris, I concur!
I was only just this minute thinking I might fancy a walk through the nature trails and was in the process of filling a flask, before asking Katie if she fancied joining me, when I looked round, expecting to see streams of sunlight peeking through clouds, but was instead met with portents of gloom!
I'm still going though. Just need to remember to wear waterproofs, which is a sure way of rebrightening any day and leaving me sweating like a sweaty thing on national be more sweaty than usual day! 😊

we all like to be in the limelight so why shouldn't they. this time of year the sun is very strong and i always seek out shade when i don't care to bask in it. you give life to the seemingly insignificant.

Thank you Pete for your thoughtful review. All the very best to you.
Hello dearest Chris,
Yes, it is me trying to get back into the "swing" of things as I sit here on vacation in Paris. My intention is to write daily and catch up on my neglected reviewing. This has been a rather dicult 1 1/2 years but now things have calmed down. I think of you as one of my first freinds here on Writers cafe and so I was delighted to read you lovely and inspiring poem today!
All my very best,
Lisasview, now in Paris

This piece, Chris, captures beautifully the sentiment of holding the best moments with an open hand, and allowing them to continue 'becoming'...
There is a seasoned wisdom in that. And this poem whispers a gilded reminder.
I very much admire your craft!

Thank you Lara for your encouraging comments. You are greatly appreciated.
a rare rhyming poem from Chris and done very nicely
I must confess to having sometime ago, murdered a Paperbark Birch
When first planted it was 3" tall but over the years grew until its roots threatened our home's very foundation!!
it was supposed to have been a shrub however we were but a young inexperienced couple, not at all knowledgeable in the ways of plant growth
a truly unfortunate scenario but who can predict such things as this taking place.....))
Ever since, each night I humbly pray for forgiveness and in recompense have planted, at the very least, 70+ other trees in our surrounding area.
I only hope it looks down from tall tree heaven with an open and understanding sense of forgiveness.....))

The Season is as fickle as we are, always changing shades,
Like how we would be changing clothes, completely unfazed,
Yet everytime she changes her form and clothings,
She acts so flamboyantly as if she was the sole beauty for beholding,
Certainly, as you said, too much attention doesn't pay,
Even if you take one glance or a dozen, the Season won't delay.
- Stu. T.H. (November 24, 2023), this is a gift poem, I suppose.
Anyhow, your work was beautifully written, author Chris Shaw, I can feel the colors of the scenery depicted being snuffed away by a chilling breeze from here. Or is it an actual breeze that came by me... Who knows ~

I often wish I could be where the writer is when a piece is written, so see through their eyes. Your words create a vision in my own head. And so the story goes on. Thank you for sharing your lovely words, Chris!

Many thanks Seriana for your visit and kind comments. Have a great Sunday.
Funny, I like the cold and all the shadows produced only because I live in catastrophic bushfire conditions so I feel safe in the colder conditions . Autumn and Winter are my best months because I’m a severe allergy sufferer in spring and summer. So the bleakness is so welcome in my life that you have written so nicely.

Albert, my paternal grandfather introduced me to Tennyson when I was nine. I have loved poetry ever since but did not attempt writing a single piece until I was 40. It's never too late to try somethin.. more..
