Rise and Shine

Rise and Shine

A Poem by Chris Shaw

in the throes
of January shadows
admire the simplicity
of a blackbird perched
on a limb of silver birch

a songbird whose
sweet notes pour forth
from its tiny fragile throat
to greet my morning

where brushwood twigs
suspended in fine tangles
sweep the sunshine air
bedraggled like bedroom hair
night time beguiling

has made early hours
lighter and brighter
my window eyes smiling

There's something about a bird's song that lifts us up, whether in bed or not. Like you, I'm sometimes blessed with a little wakeup call outside my window. A sweet and honest poem that makes smile, dear Chris.

Oh, yes. It was completely a time for joy when it was early morning. When I would wake up before school or on Saturday mornings (Probably 5 or 6 am, It was normal for me), I would take it as a blessing and read my books. I would also brush quickly and get a biscuit from the biscuit box. Overall, it's relatable and lovely. I loved enjoying birds chirping and when it rained, it was better.

Chris, you do nature poetry so well. In my case, I probably wouldn't be able to be aware of a crow or any other kind of bird until after my first cup of coffee.
