Flowers for Khalisee

Flowers for Khalisee

A Poem by Chris Shaw

Kai sows seeds
from a paper packet
a promise of new beginnings
little fingers delve in
warm compost

plastic pots in the greenhouse
soil watered and ready
sunflowers for his sister
special seeds
not the usual splash of
sunny yellow skirts
these will bloom in pretty pink
for his precious sibling

necks will stretch
to reach powder blue sky
heads will turn in the direction
of sun’s glory as it travels
through the days of summer

small boy of five
plants wishes for the new
arrival in his family
three weeks old she
ignites his liquid brown eyes
with love

dirt covered hands
wet socks and shoes
a heart brimful of sunshine

flowers for his Khalisee

Wonderfully done Chris. A well written piece that spaeaks of new love a brother will have for a sister.
Being a big brother is its own reward.

Fun being a granparent ... ain't it!

I really like this poem and I also have a fondness for pink flowers. I'm not sure if this was done intentionally, but I like how Kai's love for his upcoming sibling is represented through flowers. The line "A heart brimful of sunshine" perfectly exemplifies that. I imagine that the sunshine is a reference to sunflowers. I might be overthinking it, nicely done :)

I loved your poem, at first I thought it would be dark because the title reminded me of the book, "Flowers for Algernon" and the names in the poem reminded me of "The Game of Thrones", but after reading it, it reminded me more of the short story, " Autumntime" by Anthony Lentini. And then it reminded me of the overall meaning of flowers, which is hope, thank you for this and your beautiful writing that let me visual your words...

I really enjoyed the feel of this. Without getting wordy you convey so warmly the extra effort the young boy puts into these seeds. I especially liked the necks will stretch ... passage with the powder blue sky. There's something about plants following the sun that speaks of always rather than transient or one-off. I hope you don't mind me saying this, but until the mention of new sister, I was unsure whether this might be a memorial from a boy who's lost his sibling and plants the flowers as a cherished shining memory. Either way it's a delightful poem. Thanks for posting.
