Spooked

Spooked

A Poem by Chris Shaw
"

observational

"
sparrows nesting in
hedge ivy
do not venture where
the terracotta warrior
stands on guard
his full eighteen inches
protecting the graves
of felines long gone

it’s almost as though
they sense the presence
of the ghosts of those once sly
prowlers of the undergrowth
and the bird seed shaken
from the feeders suspended
on orange blossom branches
remain at the feet of
the already fallen

The cats lick their chops when they see birds...the birds sense their presence....and somehow even when those cats pass on, their ghosts still scare those poor birds..
And yet I read this and I think of our leader with his orange blossom hair...the kind of petal that opens wide, takes in all it can...but can't take it with him and in the end...he will be the fallen.

Chris...
My wife raised Persian cats for years before she died... She banned me from all participation except I was the SDPS (super duper pooper scooper) and driver when we delivered... Out of Nashville to Pasadena Texas, to Cape May, NJ, to Jacksonville, Florida...
I have only one of them left, Phaedra... a smoke gray beauty with a resting scowl face. And there Is Roxie, our 17 year old Torti... I'm sure she will join the other ghosts in the not too distant future...
The thing is you reveal a lovely heart of you own...
