Outside The Skylight

Outside The Skylight

A Poem by Chris Shaw

a vast expanse of ebon sky
a wrap to warm within its arms
outside the skylight velvet smooth
a comfort blanket how it charms
and soothes the creases of the day
the silhouettes of distant trees
familiar sturdy constant true
how nature is a friend to me
how nature breathes how nature calms
and whispers words in night time breeze
the world is sleeping, sleeping tight
while nature gifts its company

Chris, this poem is such a comforting read. I love how you turn the night sky and trees into a warm, protective presence. Like nature itself is wrapping the world in a blanket. The rhythm and imagery make the quiet of night feel tender and safe, and I found it genuinely soothing.

I doesn't change or falter does it Chris, the natural world is without pretense.

We are just a small part of the all encompassing energy that is the universe.

A little peek outside the skylight makes you feel at one with the greatness of it all...a sense of belonging and oneness.

Beautiful Chris. I am truly a nature lover and here it is painted in all its majesty with lovely metaphors and a meter that feels like the rocking of the trees in the breeze and a soothing rhyme.

A poem on the company of nature with a message that goes down deep. I loved how you describe the distant trees as "familiar sturdy constant true."
Your words emphasize how great a constant nature is in our lives and how wonderful a source of comfort and joy.

Its wonderful to step out in the silent hours because that's when one feels the powerful breath of nature. I also feel that those who are so tuned to nature have a lot of inner strength and power and lead beautiful lives.

I love to wake up at dawn and watch the sunrise. Its at that very instant that the owls give out their last hoots and the birds fly out from their nightly perches to begin their quests for the day. Its awesome to be a part of this divine drama.

Thanks for another gem of a poem! 💕

I like the use of "gifts" as a verb.
You make nature your friend...and that is the kind of person and poet you are.

The night has often been used as a negative symbol, but this offering provides a different view. Here it is seen as a "comfort blanket" that "soothes the creases of the day." As much as day, night can show nature as a friend. It calms as the world sleeps.

i think this is wonderful, Chris ... how we too much demonize the night with fright and gore .. it is a beautiful velvet to wrap ourselves in .. i am in Fall right now with days in the 60s and 70s mostly and nights a fantastic 40s-50s for sleeping cozy. love this poem my friend .. it's a keeper for sure!
