Robin Song

Robin Song

A Poem by Chris Shaw

the last of leaves have fluttered down
a dying carpet covers ground
where once the scented flowers grew

yet there on naked branches stirs
the twitching of a little bird
its stature small its being felt

it sings its winter song for me
perched high atop its melody
a nest is found within my heart

i listen to those soulful notes
that chirp forth from a tiny throat
that carry on the early air

a living creature how it lifts
the joy of nature brings a gift
this morning has a sunshine start

Chris, amazing work capturing the changing of the seasons. sometimes we can forget to find the beauty in nature, especially when it's cold outside. this poem can help us find that balance.

outstanding. delightful, simply delightful. this touches me as i am enamored by such things. as my muse thoreau wrote long ago, "Nature will bear the closest inspection. She invites us to lay our eye level with her smallest leaf, and take an insect view of its plain." much enjoyed this song chris.

Interesting what pleasures nature can provide us just by going its normal way. If urbanization continues to drive animals from their habitats, we will lose as much as they will.

I live in the northeast of the United States, and take great pleasure, in fact, in knowing that others around the world watch the leaves change and fall this time of year. So solemn, yet peaceful. How quiet the autumn mornings can be in the chill. And how precious, perhaps, the small signs of life as winter draws near.

Beautiful work, Chris.

Chris... we are a complicated species. Our mechanics let us find food, water, shelter... all the necessities, but there is more to us than meets the eye. The mechanical me can see, hear, and identify a robin, but only my spirit can fly away on a chirp from a tiny throat. Most people don't even hear that bit of beauty or read poetry...

Hi Chris, I have been away for a while, your poem is the first I have read in days and thank you, it is lovely. There are many great lines but I particularly like “a nest is found within my heart.” Robins were so common in my childhood but I rarely see them in the urban area where I now live. It‘s going on midnight; I will make a point of rereading this in the morning.
