I See and Feel You

I See and Feel You

A Poem by Chris Shaw
"

( for a loved one)

"
so when the going gets tough
when the pathway ahead is spiked
with sharps
when the days are rough-edged
and stony
the nights lonely quiet and long
when the blackbird’s song is deaf
to unhearing ears

when the sun has sunk behind
the horizon
and the stars no longer wink
or blink in the dark night sky
when all the weary world seems
hostile
and you are the fly caught in
a sticky spider’s web

how in hell’s name
do you find a magic spell
to climb out when you can’t shout
and your whispers fall flat
at the feet of a mind that’s broken
and had enough

i can only be your company

Having worked for 12 years in a chronic disease hospital, I can identify with this one. The last line says it all. Sometimes you can only be company. Still, do it anyway. You never know how much good you can do by just being there.
