Love In Bloom

Love In Bloom

A Poem by Chris Shaw

an unpretentious man hardworking
not an idle bone in his lean body
works diligently making things
more comfortable
easier on the eye for those
he loves

from the kitchen i see him
through greenhouse windows
he transplants double-headed begonias
tiny starter plants into polythene pouches
twelve plants in twenty four pouches
healthy plants that are positioned on racks
where they will stay till May’s out

then they will find themselves displayed
in every part of the garden
spilling over in assorted orange
yellows and reds
a huge bouquet of summer lovely
his finger nails and compost clad fingers
tell a story of the glory of our
scented haven

Thanks Chris, very nicely done. Gave me hope for spring here in the rain and reminded me of my grandmother who was a master gardener, absolutely loved flowers, planted hundreds. After mowing their lawn I would sit in the kitchen with her where she would speak of homesickness for the land in eastern Canada my grandfather had moved her from. At these times she sometimes gave me books which I treasured.

Albert, my paternal grandfather introduced me to Tennyson when I was nine. I have loved poetry ever since but did not attempt writing a single piece until I was 40. It's never too late to try somethin.. more..
