A Fresh Perspective

A Fresh Perspective

A Poem by Chris Shaw

i watch from my garden chair
captivated by movement
of newly hatched leaves
and their gentle sway in the
afternoon heat
the trees in the distance respond
waving politely in shades of green

since the cypress was felled
two years in the past
i have grown fond of this lighter vista
the outlook has brightened and widened
where once the shade blocked out
the summer sun
now in its place open space

there is room to breathe
the air is less crowded where
i feared the change and mourned
the loss of an old friend
instead the sky is a backdrop
i see birds in flight
blessed am i with new found light

Wow! I'm a simple writer but when I read your work and like many on this site you have way with.words, the flow and imagery as one read art inside the mind I had to go back and read again. Love this work because one look with open eyes.

Thank you for sharing an enjoyable read.

Chris, I think if you closed your eyes, you could still imagine that Cypress standing. But think, now you get to see all the things it used to see when it stood tall and shaded you!

That tree certainly had a better view than I did back in the day. Lovely to see all those trees now .. read more
I feel this when I watch the squirrels in my backyard get together and go hog wild on a pile of peanuts and sunflower seeds.

I feel the same thing when I read this. Well done Dr Shaw.

There’s a gentle clarity in this, how loss opens into light. The widened sky, the room to breathe, the way change becomes a blessing. Lovely write, Chris.

Change can be difficult to accept at times, but often it can create a better situation. We must learn not to let fear guide us.

Dear Chris
Sometimes we we feel sad when a tree is felled because it's part of mother nature... on the other hand, if it is blocking the sun and creating darkness, then we feel free, the light has finally reached us,we can see the nature that once was hidden...birds, the sky, the sun and more... lovely

Soft and observant—you turn loss into slow acceptance, letting the landscape teach the emotional shift rather than forcing it.
The grit sits quietly in that change of view: what once felt like absence becomes space, and space slowly turns into something like relief.
