A Fresh Perspective

A Fresh Perspective

A Poem by Chris Shaw

i watch from my garden chair
captivated by movement
of newly hatched leaves
and their gentle sway in the
afternoon heat
the trees in the distance respond
waving politely in shades of green

since the cypress was felled
two years in the past
i have grown fond of this lighter vista
the outlook has brightened and widened
where once the shade blocked out
the summer sun
now in its place open space

there is room to breathe
the air is less crowded where
i feared the change and mourned
the loss of an old friend
instead the sky is a backdrop
i see birds in flight
blessed am i with new found light

When one door closes another opens.
When a tree falls, a view opens.
Sometimes in life we might have that tree of safety, but we are better off when the tree is removed.

New perspectives can be difficult to acclimatise to and maybe takes longer to grow on you, but we all need a new perspective from time to time Chris. seeing things in a new light can bring great change, but not always for the better.
Luckily yours sounds like a new skylight has been offered to your vista. I just hope you remembered to install a dimmer switch... or perhaps like my wee Mammy had to do when she got older, keep about 6 pairs of sunglasses at the back door.
Now I must go look for some newly hatched leaves before the sun goes down. (It really does feel exotic saying that at 8:30 pm. ) 😃

Has it really been two whole years since you gained that patch of sky .. I distinctly recall how sad you were .. it pleases me however & no end that much good has since come out of it .. perfectly poemed as always 💜

my absolute pleasure & you too our Chris 💜
As an experience it makes good sense and is well written but as a metaphor it dives deeper into removing old familiar growths from our vista to provide new views. Very nice Chris
