My Father’s An Old Fart

My Father is almost 70 now; his time on this planet is winding down.  I’d like for my last few memories of him to be good ones.  But that was shot to hell this week.

My time with him is limited.  He asks me why I’ve been so quiet this year?  “Why don’t you call more often?”

Yet, one thing he said to me last time he was here was something I can’t get out of my mind.  He said, “Whatever you don’t break, you s**t on.”  That makes me never want to ever talk to him or see him ever again.

I guess one of the benefits of getting older is you can just say whatever you want to whomever.

whatever happens just hope for the best and tell him if you're offended by his words, and it's true that sometimes people don't realise that they're hurting others with their words. good work

I'd have to ask him what he meant by that. It sounds rather amusing but I'd sure want to understand the meaning of that saying. We all have our little sayings that mean something to us but we should explain ourselves so those we are saying them to so they understand. Like someone else said in their review, I don't know your dad, but you were there and know his tone of voice and what sort of person he is. Sayings like that sure can be irritating if used is a mean spirited fashion. My mom sure had her sayings and you knew she wasn't being nice or funny when she used them. They were meant to hurt.

I'm not close to my dad at all, about the only time we comunicate is thur text message on the cell phone! sometimes i guess we need to over look certain things that's said to us by our dad's, BUT that's easier sad than done sometimes! great write!

Sometimes people who have been hardened by life
forget to approach situations with care. They underestimate
the power of their words.

Heck, my dad used to say they hid hell to keep me from f*****g it up...lol Does old age entitle us to say what we think...however spur of the moment? No. But love should. Love should allow us to say anything to someone we love without damaging the relationship. I'll tell you what you should do. You should answer that with, "Well, at least I'm not a grumpy old b*****d who is so bitter at life so he takes it out of one of the few people who can stand to be around his stinky old a*s anymore. lol You see, be blunt and forthrite...not mean spirited...but don't take his s**t and let him know you love him unconditionally...that's what I'd do...I'm very outspoken and extroverted...always have been...but I'll grant you that although I'm one of the most tender-hearted people on the planet...not many want to tangle with me or push my buttons...if I'm pushed...I shove...if I'm shoved...I knock them off the chair...etc. But you know...after that they usually gain a bit of respect and then we get along. You have to have perimeters...lines that others don't cross. I believe in respecting my parents but if they get disrespectful with me...I'm going to bring it home to them. That's how families should work. And it's fine if we fight like cats and dogs...so long as no outsider tries to say anything bad about one of us...then it's ON! lol Oh...my reply to my dad's comment? (Well, when you get there...turn the porchlight on for me pop, so I can find it. I might want to come visit sometime.) lol I still miss him though he's been dead 25 years...don't let your dad push those buttons and don't let him die alone...you'll be seventy one day too and might be just as grumpy or say things that you don't REALLY mean...just my two cents worth.

Sometimes even the young say things they dont mean, how much more so with old age? I guess I'm saying this because like your father I'm an old fart too, ok not quite as old yet, but forgiveness and love are wonderful gifts to give, dont you think?
