As I Get Older Things Begin to Fall

A Story by Christine Peters
"

As I Get Old..,

"

You know, as I get older: I'm seventy seven now and still ongoing. I notice so much when things begin to fall.

When I was a lot younger I didn't notice it so much: many times things used to drop and I would just pick them up with no bother no matter where they landed.

Yet now in my aged years, falling objects, no matter what, where or when have become a big strenuous effort for me.

Admittedly, should I fall that would become a sure big problem with weakened bones I would indeed need to call 999 and end up in hospital with numerous costly NHS appointments to follow.

No I am just talking about the simple day to day falls that just pickle my nerves..,

I go into my kitchen early morn to make a cup of coffee. I get my favourite cup, go to the fridge and grab my milk. Unscrew the milk lid and it spins to the floor. I now have to search where it has landed. I finally find it after a long, long search under under my close by living room table.

I now have to lighten that said table in order to move it so far to see the lost milk top. An effort similar to entirely moving house.

That done I now have to retrieve it and return it to its rightful place: alongside my milk container.

I have to bend down excessively.

The first increasing movements go so well. Then I find I have to excrete noises from within me as I have to bend lower " 'Arghhhh..., Ooooohhh! I recently come up with a new one for all bending low movements. I shout out 'Ouija board!'

Not that I am into that but it does help.

I think I got this figured out. Why don't manufacturers attach something so all lids don't fly off into who knows where.

Whilst I am at it " why can't we all attach something so what we do, say or act can be easily retrieved so that it doesn't cause any future unnecessary effort.

I know from local friends how what seemingly small things can do or be. They prove to be such fiddling complexibility that used to be a quick click of fingers and thumbs but now are near enemies. But Christine, mayb I'm wrong but have a feeling that you can still see certain happenings quite amusing.. having a sense of humour can see people through - if only for a minute's smile or two!

Your words are such a pleasure to read plus are a reminder that age can wither that's for sure. There are enterprising manufacturers available however.

Have you visited Age UK online? There is an enormous list of helpful advice in/on there. Quite simple to find what you want via an index of chapers or sections. If you can get out to a branch of Age UK not too far from you.. there should be personal help there too. Much luck. I'm in Dorset too!
