When waves hit

When waves hit

A Poem by C. Jayne Johnson

When waves hit
Tides tighten my ankles
Drawing me to the bottom
Surrounded by a sea of my own misery
This process is comforting
I settle into my sink
Some swim forever
Never reaching the surface
But they keep swimming

Depression does engulf the one depressed. I've known it in the past. It's like a seat you sink into and can't get out of. Your metaphor is appropriate and I can't help but think of it as rising to the top for a while before sinking back down. Good poem.

This is quite amazing. Did you mean for the double meaning and play on words - sinking into the waves/into the comforting sadness of your surroundings (kitchen sink)?

super awesome message at the end. That is called hope, that called the life.

A sad poem. Hard when we don't see hope or desire to swim to safety. I like the ending. You gave the alternative view also. Thank you for sharing the excellent poetry.
