Rainbow

Rainbow

A Story by Chloe

The first time I had ever known how hard cancer can hit it when the doctor first told me that i had it.  My mom and I were both stunned for no one that we knew had ever gone though this illness.

When we walked out of the doctor's office, all I heard my mom say was that if you want to make it to the rainbow you have to make it through the rain.  The rain, of course, was this horrible sickness.  The rainbow was still yet to come and I felt as if it never would.

Doctors appointments after doctors appointments continued.  They turned into the only think that occupied my life.

Every dinner for the next two weeks had onions in it.  My mom always cried while she was cutting them.  For my mom, when cutting onions, the problem wasn't crying, it was that sometimes she could nevr stop.

My mom never really stopped crying.  Even if there wasn't tears covering her face, I could tell that she was crying on the inside.

Days and days blew by and everyday was very unpredictable.  Some days I would wake up feeling excellent like I wasn't even sick and some days I felt so weak I needed help just making it out of bed.

On Thursday, we were on doctor appointment number 18 and I only had been sick for a little more than three weeks.

The appointment started out as they always did with blood pressure and heart beat.  Then they hooked me up to this weird machine to see how spread out the cancer cells were.

This time, the docter called his assistant over to look at the data.  My mom looked over at me with a nervous look in her eye, but she had no reason to be sad.

     "You're cured."

As soon as I heard just those two words, I couldn't believe that they were real.  I had to pinch myself to make sure that I wasn't dreaming and that my real life really had only a few more days, but I really had made it through.

     I finally found the rainbow.
