When we say goodbye.

When we say goodbye.

A Poem by Chong N. Kim

When we say goodbye . . .

I remain strong in your presence,
to hide away my vulnerability
so that you won't have to worry.

When we talk or chat online,
I get all excited inside,
because I'll be able to tell you things
I did today.
Trying to keep the conversation going,
just to be so close to you.

Moments when we are apart,
I wonder if you think of me?
Do you reminisce about our past?
Do you vision our future?
Do you think of me, always?

My thoughts of wonder continues
as I hold the empty space in my heart,
as I patiently wait for your return.
You are worth the tears
that fall from my eyes.

Never did I expect it would hurt
so much like this.
As I grip myself so tight,
holding it all together
just for you.

I carry no regrets with me
I only grasp hope and faith
that you'll come home in one piece.
Keeping strong for our family,
but I find myself feeling incomplete
without your arms.

I just need to get through the night,
holding back my tears,
Not allowing my emotions
to fall apart,
because you're not here with me.

Don't assume for a second
that you are not worth the pain
of being without you,
because I risked everything
just to say "I do."

As years go on,
I can see myself
proudly standing next to you,
admiring what you do for the rest of us,
who are unable to take on the task at hand.

I keep myself busy.
just to let the time go by;
distract myself from the loneliness
that lurks in the shadow
of my fears.

I look at our children,
and give them assurance
and admiration
for their father,
the hero.

So, when you begin to feel
afraid that I might wander off,
or that this life just might be too much for me,
just read above and know
that I am here for good.

I made a vow to be by your side,
to take in the good with the bad.
I strive to be the strong wife,
just so you can come home with love.

Always remember,
our goodbyes are only for that moment,
never forever . . .
