Dead (To You)

Dead (To You)

A Poem by Cassidy Mask

‘I love you, you know that right?’

                        You said

Those were the words that killed me

                                                (Killed you too…)

But I had to say it

I had to answer you

And tell you why I called

‘I’m sorry…’

            You listened silently

            You didn’t talk once

But I knew

                        I could hear it

                        In your breathing

            The slow

Measured way

It sounded through the

            Telephone

I could

            Hear

Your heart

Breaking

‘You’re dying’

            You stated

‘And you tell me ‘sorry’?’

‘I’m not dying…’

                        I whispered

Knowing what was coming

‘You are to me.’

Now it was my turn

(The breaking heart)

            Guess I deserved it

(Guess I loved him too much)

            It wasn’t planned

(Guess I should have thought it through)

            It wasn’t meant

            To happen

(Guess it’s a bit late for that now)

Now I repeated your words:

‘I (still) love you, you know that right?’

‘No’ Bitter, dead voice. ‘I don’t’

(Guess I deserved that too)
