The End Of The World

The End Of The World

A Poem by Cassidy Mask

The sky kisses the earth,

And I watch with eyes

Wide and staring

(And cold, oh so cold),

As the world collapses

Like a flat-pack piece

Of furniture,

Folding neatly in on

Itself.

We were there

At the end of the world

(Where were you…)

Watching from our

‘Safe’ towers,

As everything fell apart.

The seas swallowed the earth

And the frayed edges

Of the sky

Started pulling free

Revealing the broken heavens

Which hung above us

(Like the toys shoved under

The carpet.)

Out of sight, out of mind.

But suddenly our eyes

Saw nothing but

The destruction in the sky.

Spread out in folds of red

Like the battlefield

After a war waged between

The stars.

(Dead stars littered the

Bottom of the universe.)

Both sides having suffered

Tragic losses.

(Twinkle twinkle.)

What happened to the

Innocent days?

Now the sea laps at the stone

Just below my window ledge.

And it whispers with every wave

‘Come to me, my darling.

Come to me, my love. Come

To the safety of my enveloping arms,

(My suffocating grasp).’

We were there

At the end of the world.

(Where were you?)
