The Loss Of InnocenceA Poem by Cassidy MaskFor a drama piece in school on Childhood.
Loss of innocence Like blood loss Only more gradual. You don’t notice it, It starts off slowly, Silently; You don’t notice it, Not until it’s too late. Truth, That’s what causes it, A yearning for truth, Or rather, an unwelcome gift of it. Truth inflicted. Truth imposed. But what does anyone Want with truth anyway? An end to innocence To blissful ignorance. You can see it on their faces, That look, Haunted, bruised. The silence that surrounds them, Replacing that uncensored happiness, Replacing that childish elation. An end to naivety, To the certainty of fairy tales. And then that deadness, That comes to stay, Replacing joy with confusion; Smiles, with blank faces; Innocence, with truth.
