The Earth Turns

The Earth Turns

A Poem by Cassidy Mask

The earth turns

Dark again

I never meant to love you

Light again

The earth turns

Blue again

I never meant to hurt you

Green again

The earth turns

See again

I never meant to use you

Blind again

The earth turns

Blue-green

Squashed sphere

Not quite round

But not flat

This is home

This house

This room

This floor

Amongst the piled clothes

And dusty CD cases

Amongst the photographs

Of days that never happened

Except in some distant memory

And in my own imagination

Your face looks up at me

From a thousand glossy pictures

When I turn my head to the side

And I can almost imagine you’re lying next to me

Almost

This is home

This patch of carpet

Hidden beneath layers

Of crumpled receipts

And train tickets

From years far in the past

We took a train to the seaside one day

We walked along the pier

And licked ice creams ‘til our tongues froze

And we had to hold each other

Just to keep from freezing in the wind and rain

Your arms around me kept me warm

Held me together so well

I considered never letting you go

But the earth turns

And the past ends

I never meant to love you

But I did

Dark again

Light again

The earth turns

And things change

I never mean to hurt you

But I did

Blue again

Green again

The earth keeps turning

Unstoppable

I never meant to use you

But I did

See again

Blind again

Blind again

Blind again

We walked together over soft round pebbles

With the sea spitting and roaring beside us

You stood between me and it

And pretended to protect me

From its foaming arms

I loved you then

I love you now

But I broke you

Broke us

Pressed the button to self destruct

While you were standing right beside me

And you got caught in the blast

Came crashing down

Into my mess

Into my hate games

I loved you even then

And I love you now

I just couldn’t show it

I just can’t let you know

That it was all my fault

That I’m sorry

The earth turns

Again

And again

And we turn with it

So please

                See again…

Your pieces are all so enjoyable to read.
The flow and rhyme.
"I never meant to love you.
But I did."
Ah, such striking words.
Wonderful.
