Gulps Of Air

Gulps Of Air

A Poem by Cassidy Mask

Every breath escapes

With a loud rush

A shushing that is strangely loud

And inappropriate

In the frozen silence

Of dying seconds

It seems wrong

That these last moments

On the earth

Should be lost

Beneath loud breathing

Chest rises and falls

Roughly

Sudden deep breaths

Amongst the rasping

Of short sharp gulps of air

All that is heard is this

While the world turns

In slow motion

And it’s annoying

To the point of

Becoming infuriating

Air whooshes in

A dark gurgling inside

Then breath

Shoots back between

Lips

Certainly more is happening

But it is unnoticed

Unable to be noticed

Past the disturbing

Certainty

Of these final

Gulps of air.

Air:        Nitrogen

Oxygen

Argon

                Carbon Dioxide…

That’s all it comes down to in the end

In the final moments:

Air

Gulps of air

Useless now

But essential
