Malcontent (Back-Seat Driving)

Malcontent (Back-Seat Driving)

A Poem by Cassidy Mask

There’s a monster

Sitting in the corner of your room

And its name is Malcontent

It’s watching me with

Mocking eyes

And I know exactly what it sees

(The same as the mirror)

So let’s take a drive

On the outside

(While inside

We’re near enough comatose)

We’ll go to the places

We’re meant to

All the ones in the travel book

And make an effort

To feel real

But the monster

Our old friend

Decides to tag along

So let’s take a long drive

Off a short pier

And call it unfortunate

(A big mistake)

We could drive to a warzone

Die in the (friendly) fire

End the war

Go unnoticed

Whatever you want

Just don’t let me

Fall asleep.

(Miss the action)

There’s a monster

Sitting in the back seat

And it’s watching us

With mocking eyes

So let’s take a drive

To a cold desert

And leave it

Sitting in our dust

As we make our escape

(Open our eyes)
