Protesting Hallelujahs

Protesting Hallelujahs

A Poem by Cassidy Mask

Here’s the river

And here’s the market

And here’s the church

With it’s pointed steeple

Now here’s the maid

And here’s the gentleman

And here’s the priest

With his kind expression

Now here’s a laugh

And here’s a shout

And here’s a cry

Of the greatest disappointment

And we’ll stand,

Maids as we are,

By the river,

Faces split with laughter

And we’ll chase,

Gentlemen as we are,

Through the market

After a thief, with a shout

And we’ll watch

From our stony plinths,

Saints and martyrs as we are,

As the priest,

With his kind expression,

Enters the church,

With its steeple

Sharply pointed.

And we’ll listen

To his cry of

Disappointment,

And from them

Protesting hallelujahs.
