Solitary Walks In Winter

Solitary Walks In Winter

A Poem by Cassidy Mask

I love the crunch

Of frozen mud

Beneath my wellingtons

And the cold bite

Of the air

On my fingers

Nose

Ears and chin

I love the

Crack

Of breaking ice

And the crackle

Of icy leaves

And I love the woods

In winter

As I take a lonely walk

Down paths

I’ve often trod

Birds hop

In the undergrowth

Beside the road

And a rabbit

Startles me

As it scuttles off

Beneath the trees

And the sky

Is a blue

So clear and bright

It hurts to look up

And I can hear

Bangs that echo

From the quarry

And barks

From the dog shelter

And the chatter

Of my own teeth

As the frozen sky

Extends its arms

Down to me

And I’m walking

Alone

And more alive

Than I’ve been in weeks.
