The Ascent

The Ascent

A Poem by Cassidy Mask

‘Fog like a carpet of swan down.’

‘Now don’t get all poetic on us.

All poetical talk is prohibited in the absence of permission from the landowner.’

‘What about non-soppy poetic language?’

‘Oh joy, my favourite.’

‘Shoot a rabbit with a gun

Ha ha, yum yum.’

‘I’m going to use that now.’

‘“Showing his black heart and lack of poetic skill

So we rolled him down the hill.”’

‘Does this count as a mountain or is it just a hill?’

‘Well at 1500m I suppose it is a mountain...’

‘It better be a mountain.

I didn’t just walk up all that, only to find out I only reached a hill-top.’
