Knightmare

Knightmare

A Poem by Cassidy Mask

I stand

Camouflaged

Against a wall of granite

My armour

Flashing dully

In the dark glow

That radiates

From the sinking sun

I lift the heavy

Blade at my hip

And reflect that I

Always did want to

See the past

(Another world)

Witness humanity

And die.

My visor weighs

Down on my head

And I lift it

Breathe

The firing squad before me

Are clad in

Papal purple

Their weapons raised

In a mock salute

Slowly

One by one

They take aim

Above me

The angels cross

Themselves

And a starling

Starts to sing

He sings so loud

It drowns out

The gunshots

And as they tear silently

Into metal

And flesh

I whisper to the bleeding sky

‘Lord Jesus Christ,

Son of God,

Have mercy on me.’
