Being The Hero

Being The Hero

A Poem by Cassidy Mask

You smile as you

Say goodbye

Off to learn how to kill

And all I can do

Is blink to hide my tears

You’ll come back one day

A hero

Or I’ll never see you again

And they’ll expect me to be glad

Grateful

That you died for your country

Died for lazy, selfish people

Who never knew your name

Died killing men

Just like you

Who happened to stand

On the wrong side

Of a very thin line

They’ll call you a hero

And I’ll bite my tongue

Until it bleeds

Hoping they never notice

My opposite opinion

Twisted expression

You smile

Nonchalantly as you

Set off to learn

How to kill

And I try not to hate you

For ‘doing the right thing’

For being ‘heroic’

‘Farewell little sister’

You say with a smile

And I try not to imagine

Your finger on a trigger

Being the hero.
