Dream BeastA Story by Cassidy MaskI dream of running. Of claws and teeth. Of hiding in the dark. Of waiting, Gasping for breath. I dream of pouncing Of snarling and biting Of ripping. I dream And in my dream I am a beast A killer. And I am afraid.
I move with a loping gait, the snow (or is it a beach?) vanishing quickly beneath my paws. I’m nearing water, the grey mass reaches out to the farthest horizon. And my fear grows, a tingling in my arms and neck. I am tense, ready to spring.
There are people here, they make my hair stand on end. I hide, but one is coming nearer. My claws gleam as I hunch down. Already I can picture how this will go - the man caught unawares between my teeth and claws.
I draw my lips back, a thrill of excitement coursing down my spine and limbs, and…
I awake, eyes fly open. Staring wildly at the night. A light flashes, blinds me.
I look again.
The moon Full and fat Floats, radiant white Against the Blue-black sky.
In the dark
