A Story by Meghan

I have a lot of friends who are really religious. They go to church every week, read the Bible regularly and genuinely lead a very Christian life. I’ve always admired these friends because they are quite obviously strong and committed to what they believe. They don’t care what others say, they just follow what they believe in. They love their God, and they honestly would do anything for him. And like I said I’ve always admired this, but I’ve never understood it. I never understood how someone could put complete faith in something that they don’t know exsists. I have a hard time putting faith and trust in things I know to be true. I believe religion is a good thing; it gives a model for people on how to lead a good life. I think a lot of what the Christian faith preaches are good life lessons: treating each other with kindness and respect, no lying, cheating, or stealing, no murdering, no adulterating, the list goes on. And it’s not just the Christian faith, Judaism and Muslim faiths also talk about similar good deeds. I think that living a good life is important and it should be how everyone lives, but I don’t think you have to do it for a God or gods. People should live a good life for themselves and because it’s the right thing to do. I’m not an atheist, i do believe in something, I just don’t know what. And I think that whatever is up there won’t be angry if I didn’t pray to him or give him my money or go to his church or temple or mosque every week. As long as I’m leading a respectable life and set a good example for others I think he will be happy. For the people that do believe in God or Jesus or Allah, I respect you very much and I think that it is great that you are able to show your God so much love, but that way of life is personally not for me. And hopefully, when we all die, those who led a good life and had faith in their God (no matter what their religion), hopefully all of the good people go somewhere like heaven or paradise or are reincarnated as Kings…whatever you believe I hope is happens for all of you. And if you’re like me and you don’t really know what you believe or don’t believe at all, but you lead a good life, then hopefully, assuming there is an after-life, something good happens to us too.

I think this is very insightful, and I honestly feel the same way. I am not an atheist, but I am also not committed to any specific religious practice or faith. Like you, I do believe that there is something, I am just not sure what that something is, but I am open to the possibilities. I can tell from what you wrote that you are a very open minded person, who respects everyone's ideals and beliefs. I agree with you that leading a good life and doing the right things in life are important, and if faith is what helps someone get there then I think that they are very lucky to have that in their life.

I also think that what you wrote is very thought provoking. It's nice to know that someone feels the same way I do on this subject. I thought this was well written and also well thought out. You reflect a lot of yourself on this subject, and I really respect that.
