Shameless

Shameless

A Poem by Ben Taylor

I cleared my throat and you turned towards me,
twin pools of cobalt sky,
limpid and glass-bright in the midday glare.
I suddenly realized I was barely even conscious,
much less coherent.
After remembering the intricacies of inhalation,
I let my chin drop, an amalgamation of consonants messily spilling out.
Well meant and crudely constructed.
My tongue had never seemed like such a complicated machine --
but then again, you were the most beautiful creature I had ever seen.
I said my bit and fled, desperately hoping you realized that my sentence in shambles
was only crumbling beneath the weight of an incredulous truth,
beneath something I suddenly had no way of vocalizing.
Before the instant evaporated I saw you smile,
your azure eyes brightening as you turned to go.
Even if I looked a fool, I gave you something.
Something good.
