Sweet On You

Sweet On You

A Poem by Ben Taylor

I've never been that paralyzed before,
completely paralyzed by contentment.
Despite what may happen in the future,
despite any worries that may force themselves down our throats,
in that moment the universe was at rest in my mind.
I couldn't move my arms --
I knew that there was no adjustment, no alteration of the situation,
that could make me more satisfied than I was in that fraction of existence.
I felt like a dream floating above myself,
a thought drifting behind us as we slept.
In that space between seconds,
in this moment that exists outside of time and
eternally inside of my head,
I experienced a copacetic existence.
With your back pressed into my chest, I discovered a happiness
stripped of all the degradations of age --
the raw emotion, as I used to feel it as a child,
unvarnished and uncorrupted.
This emotion is more than my ribs can contain.
It drips from my eyes and catches in my throat, making it difficult to swallow.
You have affected me absolutely.
