Holding On, Albeit Loosely

Holding On, Albeit Loosely

A Poem by Ben Taylor

A ragged grain of sand
placidly grips the side of a beer can.
The can's exterior screams
"Busch" in a battered blue font,
disrupting the monotony of the cloudy beach.
I watch as the tides throw themselves
towards the can,
irascibly seeking to dislodge
the oblivious fleck of rock;
but then I glance away.
I wonder how long before I
am devoured by similar waves?
I glance back, and I realize
I already am,
the beer can swallowed whole
and the grain of sand
drowning in the
unavoidable sea.

For some reason, whenever I read your stuff, the only word I can think of is "wow"... Which isn't very helpful when I'm trying to review something that obviously deserves reviewing.
For me, this is about realising you're growing up, and not being able to cope in the adult world. I'm not sure if that's how you meant it, or if that's just how I read it because that's what's on my mind right now, but... I guess the ambiguity means that everyone will see it under a different light.
I really enjoyed reading it, as is always the case with your work (:
