Breathe

Her head hit the desk, an exasperated sigh escaping her lips as she let it rest there, cradled within her arms. She was sick and tired of everything: the studying, the reading and papers she still had to do on top of the studying, and, of course, the sleep deprivation.
    
I have to stop this, she thought as she tried not to burst into tears, knowing that if she didn’t get out of here, she was going to completely lose it. Finding it difficult to summon up the energy necessary to do so, she lifted her head and pushed her chair back from her desk. A break was long past due.
    
She grabbed her keys from the desk, put on a light jacket, and turned off the light before closing and locking the door behind her.
    
There was no direction to her travels; she merely went where her feet decided to take her, along various pathways among the almost unnaturally green grass and verdant trees, the cool spring sunshine filtering down through and lighting her way.
    
She took a seat under a tree. The ground was still damp from yesterday’s rain, but she paid no heed; she leaned back against the tree, tilting her head upward with her eyes closed, trying not to think about finals or laundry or English papers.
    
For now, all she wanted to concentrate on was breathing.
