So today I was sitting outside for a while enjoy the
beautiful weather. I finally decided
to take my glasses off for a few minutes.
I ended up keeping them off for a while.
I just began looking around. I
have not really looked at the world through my own eyes for a very long time,
well not without assistance. They only
come off to clean them or when taking a shower.
Then I am not paying much attention.
Any ways I just sat looking at nature with my own eyes and a
few things came to mind. First off I
realized how little my eyesight has changed in years and I am grateful for
that. Then I started thinking how my
regular eyesight is not much different from life. My vision is not perfect but then neither is
life. Plus it mat be a bit fuzzy at
times but again so is life. I am talking
bout the decisions we make, the opinions we form and the ideals we create in
our minds.
All of that is based on the life we have led. Our environment growing up, what we were
taught by our elders before we could form our own views and the good and bad
experiences that shape our lives. No
matter how old we get any kind of event could change us for the better or
worse.
There is a song by a guy named Paul Thorn that says, “No
matter what you believe you might be wrong.”
He is referring to how every religion believes they are right and how it
often separates people because they do not agree. That thought though extends to everything in
life. Really life is all about
perception through every individual’s eyes.
In reality the only thing that is black and white is that we all
eventually die. What we do in this life
is like continual artwork, always open to interpretation.
You have written a piece which could open a discussion that would last for hours. You actually "listened" to life's many lessons through your eyes today. As the blind heart sees, hears and feels, the eyes see, hear and feel....just as the ears can see, hear and feel the breaths of life. I guess what I am attempting to convey is that you watched a silent movie of life today, yet your eyes were able to translate all the physical emotions.
Your skilled pen continues to delve deeply into the mysteries that so intrige a writers perception of life.

Thank you for sharing you thoughts on the subject.
What better piece to read then on a day I've been told I need glasses :)

A perfect conclusion to such a well written, insightful piece. Through your eyes you have portrayed heartfelt emotions, great job Dale.

No kidding, well now that is what I call timing....
Thank you very much.
There is a thing we naturalists are trained to do with our eyes when we are in nature. It is called looking with your "peripheral vision." It means softening your intent focus so that more of the background comes into effect; think of it as a photograph where the subject is allowed to recede in order for the background to broaden. What you describe here, reminds me of that practice. Softenign the focus, the intent; allows us to take in more of the picture. It can be done anywhere... driving, walking a city street, etc. There is a lot to be said about seeing with your own eyes, once you can let context in.
I too wear glasses/contacts my vision is quite myopic. That being said one of my favorite things to do is to take my glasses off at night and look at the city lights- it's so beautiful. You are so wise, we spend a lot of our waking hours trying to prove our worth by being right; I'm guilty of it myself. In fact my husband claims it is a hobby of mine. We are nothing if we can't be introspective and stop to see and enjoy the impressionism that is life.

We are all guilty of it, I think it is human nature. Thank you for sharing your insight.
I'm blind as a mole when I wake up in the morning. It usually just makes me feel helpless.. Maybe I will try your approach. Some really good insights here, and I loved that last line in more than one way. *smile*
This is an impressive, thoughtful essay, Dale. In this simple exercise of looking around, you gained such perception, such insight. I absolutely love your concluding sentence: "What we do in this life is like continual artwork, always open to interpretation". these words should be on an inspirational poster!
It's better to be dead and cool than alive and uncool
