friendship and forgivenessA Chapter by The Rock And Roll Cowboy(REBEL WITH A CAUSE)During the first four classes Cassandra attended, she kept very quiet. She just listened, but never engaged in asking or answering questions. When it was lunch time, she decided to get a bag of Cheetos and a can of Sprite out of the vending machines. She sat at a table by herself. She watched all of her classmates interact with one another. Then, out of the corner of her eye, she saw someone was beginning to sit next to her. “What are you? A hermit now.” Cassandra looked over to see that it was Ally. “Actually, I feel more like a leaper.” Ally giggled. Then looked at Ally.” I see you opted for a healthy lunch this time.” Cassandra nibbled on her Cheeto, then laid it on the table. She looked at Ally with sad eyes. “I’m really not that hungry.” She then realized that Ally didn’t have any food in front of her. “ What about you? You know air is not very filling.” She lightly chuckled. “Well, actually, I was hoping to go off campus with my friend to Arby’s.” Cassandra looked around, then looked at Ally quizzically. “Me.” She pointed to herself. “Of course, you silly,” Ally replied playfully. “Oh.” Cassandra took a sip of her Sprite. “I didn’t think you’d want anything to do with me now.” Ally nudged Cassandra’s arm with her elbow. “Now, why would you say that?” Cassandra shrugged her shoulders. “I don’t know. Because of how I’ve been treating you lately. And that I didn’t invite you to that party. “ She heaved a sigh. “Not that it was much of a party. It was more like hanging out in the park, drinking.” Ally cocked her head and stroked her chin.” Look. I admit you have been a bit distant with me. And yes, I was very angry when your dad said you were at a party. so much so that I blocked you and your mom’s calls.” She paused and tapped Cassandra on the arm with her fist. “You know we’ve been friends since elementary school. But i get it. You had a crush on Jeremy.” She lightly giggled. “I couldn’t blame you, I mean, he’s gorgeous.” “It's still no excuse for what I did.” Cassandra sharply said. She took a deep breath and continued in a calmer tone. “Sorry, I’m just mad at myself.” “It’s okay. Plus, I know you’re dealing with your father’s death.” Ally put her hand on the back os Cassandra’s shoulder. “I’m sorry. Do they know who did it?” “Not yet.” Cassandra paused. “At least not that I’ve heard of yet.” Ally stood up. “I tell you what. Why don’t we get out of here? Maybe take a walk or something.” Cassandra stood up and looked at Ally with a big smile. “Thank you. That would be great.” They walked away from the table with their arms locked. As they did, Cassandra said. “You know, you really are my best friend.” “Watch out.” Ally retorted playfully. “That might ruin your reputation. Both girls giggled. © 2026 The Rock And Roll Cowboy(REBEL WITH A CAUSE) |
