As they drove to the station, Jake asked Sally to check into Emily’s finances, and look into her credit card purchases. While he got started on running a background check to find out more about her personal past, and see if she had any arrest records.

Once at the station, Jake went straight to his desk and fired up his computer. Sally went to the front desk and got on the phone with the credit card company.

When she returned to the desk, Jake was still tapping on the keyboard. As she sat down, he said. So, what did you find?”

Sally sat down. “Well, I didn’t go into her full financial records. But checking her credit card, it turns out she used it at Spirit Halloween on October twenty-ninth for 19.12.” She paused.” What about you?”

“Well, she’s had no prior arrest, but back on September 3rd of2001, she was involved in an accident that killed two people. One was her daughter. The other was her granddaughter.” Jake looked at the screen. “According to the report, she claims she fell asleep at the wheel. The breathalyzer came up clean.”

Sally looked at Jake. The look on her face said she had an idea. Finally, she said. “You don’t think she’s trying to start a new family?”

Jake looked at her with confusion. “What do you mean?”

“Well, you said her daughter and granddaughter were killed in the accident?”

“That’s what the report says. “Jake still looked confused.

“Well,” Sally raised her arm and pointed upwards while shaking her finger. “This may sound far-fetched.” She put her hand down. But maybe she’s trying to recruit Camille as her daughter. And Camille’s kids as her grandkids.”

“Wow. “ Jake paused a long moment. “You know, that does seem far-fetched. But then again. Not so far-fetched.”

He stood. “We’ve got to get to that store and confirm she was there. And find out what she bought.” He quickly walked towards the door. Sally quickly caught up. Her adrenaline suddenly shifted into overdrive.
