Inappropriate Commercial?

Inappropriate Commercial?

A Story by The Rock And Roll Cowboy(REBEL WITH A CAUSE)

For those of you that know me you know am very liberal and easygoing.  I don’t get offended easily and have a sense of humor bout things.  Last night though I saw a commercial that really got under my skin.  I just found it highly inappropriate for the situation.  Let me explain.

Back in the eighties there was a rap called “Baby Got Back” by Sir Mix A Lot.  It starts off “I like big butts and I can not lie…” I always loved it, thought it was fun plus I love the butt.

So this commercial comes on with that song as the jingle with the words changed but you could tell it was Sir Mix A Lot… this time it started off, I Like square butts and I can not lie…”  , can’t tell you much bout the words after that but it referred to Spongebob and Patrick… then they had those two dancing on screen with the Burger King mascot.  They also flashed to woman dancing made up to look like they had square butts.

Eventually they flash to Sir Mix A Lot sitting on a couch watching television with two ladies and he says, “Booty is booty.”

Then they let you know Burger King now has Sponge Bob toys in their Kid’s meals.

Now I know they changed the song up a bit but the fact they referred to butts and saying,“booty is booty” all to advertise kids toys.

I am not offended by much other then things like prejudice and racism, but I have to say I was quite applaud by that commercial.  I just found it wasn’t appropriate for their objectives.

So tell me what do you think?

Burger King's Booty Call
April 6, 2009
Burger King is employing booty to sell burgers. The burger giant's new commercial, for a 99-cent kid's meal, aired during last night's lopsided national championship game between Michigan State and University of North Carolina.
"I like square butts and I cannot lie," the King character raps, in an old-school homage to Sir Mix-A-Lot, as four female dancers gyrate behind him.
Square butts? The young women all have phone books in their shorts. Then Sponge Bob Square Pants appears on a television. There's your theme and justification for the kid's meal. (Don't forget SBSQ lives in a place called Bikini Bottom.)
A lot happens before the commercial closes with a coda, of sorts: Grammy Award-winning Sir Mix-A-Lot, who wrote the song being parodied, announces "booty is booty."
What does one make of this production, oddly reminiscent of the Pee-wee Herman Show? For one thing, Burger King continues to maintain its distance from more family-oriented rival McDonald's. For another, it appears aimed at urban African-Americans. But let's not kid ourselves. The country is steeped in hip-hop culture, and many white suburbanites will appreciate BK's retro "hipness."
In any case, the spot strikes me as silly and funny and a reminder that sexism can play a role in peddling fast food. Even to our children.

I google search the above info Dale~ and they also show the commercial ~ I am with you
I think it's very inappropriate to use "Booty" (sexism) to peddle fast food to our children
IMO it sends a very "do whatever you want in life kids, no rules need apply kind of message"
I disagree with David Farkus~ I don't find it one bit funny!! I find it very distasteful~Fran

Sadly, Dale, controversy sells. There is an old saying, "any publicity is good publicity". For the few moments that this commercial ran, it grabbed your attention, it fulfill its' objective. Distasteful, as it maybe. Ultimately, you have control over what and how a company adverses it's products over the airwaves. The best way to strike back, is not to buy their product.

Personally, i find the original version of the song, distasteful and sexist. Nothing can change, that for me. Shame on you, Burger King and Sir Mix-A-Lot. This just adds insult to injury. Thank you, for pointing this out to us.

I completely agree. What synergy are they trying to create between distorted sexuality and children. Burger King is VERY creepy in general. I also think the BK "King" who lurks in rooms and stalks people is equally disturbing.

it might be one thing if the add were clearly being sent to adults or teens and was being aired during adult swim or something, but its not its being sent to ten year olds via nicalodean. i was over at my friends house siting on the couch talking to her as her eight year old brother was watching afternoon television when i first saw this commercial. both my friend and i were appalled.

I so agree that you should be appauled by this commercial. While being funny to an older crowd, I think it is unjustifiable to try to send these mixed messages to our children. Kids, I think, have enough to worry about, I don't think such images should be added to them.

Thanks for bringing this up

Finally! Someone who despises that commercial! It really is dumb, and if you want my opinion it's kind of inappropriate for KIDS to be watching, especially with the meaning of the original song.... Plus, I personally detest Spongebob and the stupid pineapple he lives in. Haha. Anyways, I agree with you completely.

I did see the commercial and am finding it's been shown now at 1am or so. I agree with you and your article here, to promote kids meals this commercial sucks square a*s! lol. The Burger King -King is scary enough. I really thought the "booty is booty" remark at the end was crass. I guess the King isn't that particular about his booty. Great job on bringing this out there.

Every time I hear that commercial, I want to hunt down whoever came up with the idea and whack them upside the head with something hard and unpleasant.

I hate that commercial not because of anything other than I hate spongebob. He is obnoxious and I know I am the only person the planet that can't stand him. I would have wished they used a different song. Why ruin a classic on sponge bob?
