Doctor's Concience

Doctor's Concience

A Poem by Gerhardus Retief

As The Doctor Look The Child In The Eyes
Knowing The Little Child's Time Is Running Out
They Just Wish They Could Do Something
All They Can Do Is Lie To Sooth Their Pain
They Fall In Line One At A Time
They Don't Even Know How Far The Sickness Is Spreading
However They Stay There Holding The Child's Hand
Holding Their Fate In Mind
Mom And Dad Always Cry When They Come To Visit
The Little Child Doesn't Know Why
Only Explanation They Can Give Is Of Joy
That Their Child Will Be Finally Released Soon
But They Know Its Not Out Of The Hospital
They Just Spoil The Confused Child Now
Bringing The Child's Favorite Food
Playing The Child's Favorite Music
As It Can Be The Last Time The Child Will Ever Have It
Shattered The Doctor Leaves The Room
Falling To His Knees Where He Cannot Be Found
Even Though The Guilty Conscience Will Find Him
Follow Him To The Dark Border Line Of Guilt
Crying For An Answer Why Its Up To Him To Do This
The Memory Will Never Rest It Never Forgets
What The Parents Will Lose
Would This Doctor Have Switched Places With The Child?
At Least The Child Would Die Happy
