The Shiny Penny

The Shiny Penny

A Poem by D. Mansfield
"

A redo

"
You are the penny, that stays on the ground,
People step right over you, like you werent around.
Shining in the sun, waIting to be found.
We walk right by, like you were gum, on a shoe.
But we'd pick you up, if we really knew.

You were poorly minted, they made a mistake,
They didnt put enough copper in you , youre a fake.
Your not worth alot, of money, but you are rare.
People look at you, and even stare.

No one wants you, it's just your fate,
As if they stopped to pick you up, they might be late.
Maybe if you were a quarter, they would have time,
Those rough edges seem popular, youve scratched up mine.

You lay by the curb, passing the time
Thiinking of others,of your own kind
The rain and storms have tarnished you brown
Now it's hard to see you, laying on the ground.

A pocket full of change, you will never know,
That's just the way it was meant to be,
You guess so

This one really touched me. There’s a quiet sadness in it, but also a kind of tenderness for the overlooked. I felt that.

Thank you, I appreciate you
Awww, I just saw a penny two days ago in our Kroger parking lot. I picked it up and put it in my pocket.
They will get rarer soon...last ones have been minted. The wishing wells will starve now.
I love the play here, the allegory on human existence...you play it so well, my friend.
