A Poem by h d e rushin

You've heard,
well over a million times,
the story of  alien abductions.
Where each time the alien
becomes smaller
and the spacecraft larger.
Tiny impish,
caricaturist slit
for  a mouth.
Eyebrowless,
with no sense of humor.
The one whose tiny body
has known no American
hysteria.
No all you-can-eat buffets.
No Ambien nightmares.
No overdue mortgages.
No three day rainfalls. No
flooded basements. No
Freezers and water tanks
floating from the shipwrecked
stairwell. No child support payments.
No cheating lovers.
Just calm and spinning lights,
Pale  hostages
and silver  exasperating nights.

White hostages? It does seem that way, right? But ufo heads will be the first to tell you, that one of the most credible ufo abduction cases ever was an interracial couple by the name of Betty and Barney Hill. Barney was black, and Betty was white. Set in the early 60's it was collaborated by a police officer who the couple would later say was harassing them and following them home.

Good poem, D. It put a smile on my face right before spiriting me away....

Came back to this, (I often browse the back pages.) I'm thinking that perhaps our mostly filmic version of how aliens look and act is a subliminal desire to emulate.

Beam me up Scotty; and I just pray that McDonalds haven't got there before me! ;) Beccy.

lol...love it....thank you my friend...dana
There are so many things that i love about this Michigan, and then no. I wonder if the little alien has written a poem about fall colors, tiger's baseball, good beer, and beautiful humans. Maybe, maybe not.

Wonderful imagery and the use of a list works very well in this piece. I especially like the image you created of the flooded basement.

The watchers must think it quite humorous, observing us running around like headless chickens, so bound up in the trivial, that we hardly ever stop to wonder about the vastness all around.

Enjoyed this very much.

Beccy.

Perhaps your wry suggestion is a sage one; we shuld accept our new alien overlords gratefully (though, as Mr. Serling told us long ago, the ending of "To Serve Man" is a killer). Though you cite our "American/hysteria", there is none of that brooked here--there is a certain calm and measured tone to the piece, which, along with the use of repetition, emphasizes the world-weariness of the whole thing. A wothy entry to your collection.

Those things that can't be explained...
Really great poem. Thought provoking.
I have to admit, I'm always guilty of jumping to conclusions and tend blame the husbands in cases of missing persons. Good to see you Dana! :)

I love your writing. The last three lines.

"silver exasperating nights"

that's beautiful.
