A Poem by h d e rushin

Somewhere
a
flag will be flown, half-staff, for Hulk Hogan.
My sister
texted me at 02:12am to tell me her
cat has died.

I cry uncontrollably.
I've fallen in love with
something that has never
spoken to me tenderly.

In November
we shared an August moon together.
Just me and him being true. Neither
one of us could write our names down
much anymore.

In fact, if it weren't for a keyboard
telling lost lovers that I missed them
there would be no sense in
absence, anyways.

Your poem feels gentle but heavy, like pieces of real life put together.... loss, love, and small memories that stay with you. The mix of a flag, a late-night text about a cat, and sharing a moon makes it feel personal and true. It’s sad in a quiet way, showing how we hold on to moments and people, even when they’re gone, and how sometimes all we have left are words to say we miss them.

Hard to imagine the Hulkster is gone...we are losing so many of those celebrities from sports, music etc. now...But in some ways I wonder if we actually become closer to our pets than to anyone or any thing else in our lives.
And we poets do write about absence more than any other topic, don't we?

Everything you write is a gem.
