Must there always be pain to motivate the writing?

 

Must there be rain

to flower a desert

or a fragrance in lavender crushed

 

wells dug deep

roots that seek

 

where is the refreshing flow

of words from the soul,

is pain always the answer

 

blankly I stare,

lukewarm is the passion

I feel for the page

 

if a cut brings forth that crimson flow

then I must bleed with tears and heart ache

 

yet why is it such

that through emotions pleading

comes forth beauty,

 

that through desire

that which inspires,

 

Oh that smiles and joy

would move this pen

and animate these hands,

 

is it only trial and strife

that produces the prose

that touch another lost spirit,

 

must there be a squeezing,

like that of a winepress,

producing drink that makes merry

those in depression’s grasp,

 

this is the human condition,

such contradictions....
