Chapter 1

1 Year Later

“Jade, you need to get ready for the big test!” Her friend, Ramona, exclaimed. Jade was just looking out the window. It had been a year since her best friend had died. Jade missed her since the day she died. She didn’t know how she was able to take her best friend’s death.

“What did you say?” Jade asked. She really didn’t want to be in school today, but she had to go because her mother wouldn’t let her stay home. Her mother knew what day it was and she felt that Jade needed to be around her friends in school. It would keep her mind off of Serena.

“I said you need to get ready for the big test! It’s next period you know!” Ramona exclaimed. Jade had forgotten about the big test for math. She didn’t even want to think about taking that test. She took out a piece of paper and started working on math problems she knew she would need. She was glad that she was just in study hall. It would have been pretty bad if she didn’t have study hall to space out in.

“Oh, I completely forgot about that test. Let’s do some practice problems together,” Jade said. She wrote down some problems on another piece of paper for Ramona to do. Ramona was pretty bad at math. Ramona did the same thing for Jade. Jade wasn’t as bad at math as Ramona. She passed all of her math classes with a B.

At next period Jade took the test and knew she aced it. She looked over at Ramona who had looked nervous. “You don’t think you passed the test, Ramona?”

“I really can’t say for sure. I did a lot of practicing before the test. I think it was enough. I am glad that I got to study with you though.”

“It’s always good when we practice together because I explain the problems better than Mr. Sanchez. I understand that math isn’t your best subject,” Jade said with a smile on her face. Ramona smiled at her and they took off down the hall to get ready for lunch. Jade went to her locker to check to see if she had her lunch box. When she opened her locker she noticed she had forgotten her lunchbox. She had been distracted by her little sister this morning.

“Oh man, I forgot my lunch box,” Jade said to Ramona.

“That sucks. Do you want to share lunch with me?” She asked.

‘No, I have money. I don’t want you to starve because I forgot my lunch.” Jade said with a smile.

Lunch was boring for Jade because not all of her friends had come to school today. Kellin, her boyfriend, was absent from school today. She hated when he wasn’t here. He would always make her laugh and smile. He wasn’t there on today of all days. She needed him to hold her today. Jade knew why he was absent though. He had told her last night.

“I will be absent for the rest of the week. My mother was taken to the hospital. I need to be there for her because my father won’t be. He can’t get off of work this week. He was trying to, but he couldn’t. My mother is having surgery tomorrow,” Kellin had told her.

“I’m sorry. Why is your mother getting the surgery?” Jade asked.

“She has clogged arteries in her heart. We don’t want to lose her so they are going to give her a surgery so she doesn’t die,” Kellin said with a sad tone.

“I understand. I will come visit you after school tomorrow.” Jade said.

“That would be great!” Kellin exclaimed. His mother loved her like she was her own daughter.

Jade sighed and looked like she was bored. That was never a good thing to her friends, but they had also noticed something else in her eyes. They could see the underlying sadness coming into them. They didn’t know what it was about.

“Hey Jade, are you okay?” Kellin’s friend, Nathan, asked her.

“Yes, I’m fine. Why do you ask?”

                “You seem sad,” Nathan said.

“Well Kellin isn’t here today. I’m worried about his mother. She is in the hospital. She is getting her surgery today,” Jade told him. She looked down at the floor. She knew there was more than that, but she didn’t want to bring it up. Ramona looked at her best friend. She knew that there was more and she wasn’t going to press it out of her. That would make Jade hide more from them.

Ramona didn’t know what to do at this point. She wanted Jade to open up more. She wanted to know what she was hiding. She knew that Kellin knew what was up. Ramona decided that she was going to ask him since Kellin.

Jade couldn’t wait for the school day to be over because she was going to the hospital to see Kellin and his mother. Hopefully she was out of surgery and she was going to be okay. Jade knew that Kellin would be excited to see her. He wanted to hug her and tell her that everything was okay.

She ran to the hospital as soon as the school bell rung. She needed to book it to the hospital. She didn’t want to see anyone, but Kellin and his mother. She didn’t even want to go home to see her parents. They would remind her of things she didn’t want to remember.

“Kellin, I’m here!” she exclaimed when she got to the hospital. He ran to her and grabbed her in his arms. She smiled wide and kissed him on the cheek.

“It’s great to see you, darling,” Kellin said.

“How is your mother doing?” she asked him.

“She’s doing great! I’m happy that they got to her on time,” Kellin said. Jade smiled at him and then she kissed him.

“I’m happy that she is too! Do you think I can stay over your house tonight?” Jade asked him. Kellin looked at her in shock. This was the first time that she had ever asked him that. Of course he had slept over her house a couple of times when his mother and father were fighting. Those were the days that Kellin didn’t want to be home. He hated when his parents had fought. It would tear at him on the inside.

“Sure, you can stay at my house. I don’t think my mom and dad would mind. My dad won’t be home anyways. He has to go on that business trip that his boss is sending him on. He’s still mad that he couldn’t get off. Mother is even more upset,” Kellin said with a said sad tone.

“I understand,” Jade said. Kellin could see the sadness in her eyes. He had forgotten what day it was. He couldn’t understand what has gotten her so down today. He wanted to just make her happy. He knew that Jade was the happiest was in her arms. Kellin felt his phone going off in his pocket. It showed that he had received two texts one from Nathan and one from Ramona.

“Hey Kellin, do you know what’s going on with Jade today?” the one from Ramona said. Kellin had to think about what was going on.

“Well my mother is in the hospital. What day is it today?” Kellin sent back. He knew that it would take her 30 seconds to answer.

“Hey Kellin, how is your mother doing? Why is Jade so down today?” Nathan asked.

“My mother is doing fine. I don’t know what’s going on with Jade today.” Kellin asked.

Kellin looked at Jade who was sitting in a chair. She looked really tired and sad. He could see that she was falling asleep in the chair. He felt his phone vibrate in his pocket.

“Today is the ninth of October. Why?” Ramona asked him.

Kellin had to think about today’s date. He knew that it was a sad day for Jade. He had forgotten why she was sad. Then he started to realize that it was the first year of Serena’s death. His eyes widened.

“Serena’s anniversary is today,” he sent back to Ramona.

“That’s good and oh okay,” Nathan responded.

“I know now today is Serena’s anniversary…” Kellin responded. He knew that was the reason that Jade had seemed depressed. Kellin turned off his phone. He needed to give attention just too Jade and his mother now. He couldn’t believe that he had forgotten.

He picked Jade up and brought her into his mother’s hospital room. She fell asleep in the chair. His mother was sleeping as well. He knew that visiting hours were going to be over in a few hours. His mother woke up about 20 minutes later.

                “Hey son, how are you?”

“I’m good. I’m just worried about Jade at the moment. I hope she is going to be okay. Is it okay if I go home?” Kellin asked.

“You may. I know you will be coming by again tomorrow. I’ll be fine,” His mother said with a smile. She knew that he wanted to make Jade feel better. She knew what day it was and what was going on.

Kellin brought Jade back to his house. She had slept in the car. He woke her up when they got there. “Jade, we are at my house.”

She woke up a couple of seconds later. She got out of the car and they went up to his room. He pulled his shirt off. She pulled hers off. She pulled her pants off as well. He did the same. They got into his bed. Under the covers they took the rest of their clothes off. He kissed her and rolled on top of her. She blushed a little bit. He knew what he was doing after that.

“Jade…” a voice said in her head. Her eyes widened wide. Who’s voice was she hearing in her head?
