My CultureA Story by Angie Diane♥♥This is about my culture. I wrote this for my English class last year. I am not racist. If you are offended I am sorry. My Culture The first
culture that I would like to talk about is Native American Indians. I am Indian
because of my Great Grandmother who is still alive. The Native American Indians
had built Teepees, Wigwams, or long houses that they lived in. The Native
Americans hunted or fished when they needed it. They built canoes to go through
a river. They had been living in America. When the
Europeans came over there were about 10 million Native American Indians living
in the North which is now present-day Mexico. It was believed that they were
born during the Ice Age. It was also believed that they were originated from
Asia. They were fascinated with what the Europeans had brought over. I am Cherokee
Indian and they lived in South Carolina and other present day states. They were
discovered by Hernando De Soto. In 1715 they were reduced to 11,000 because
small pox had been spread among them. When the French and British were battling
over controlling America, the Cherokee sided with Britain. They had signed a peace
treaty with the United States. Between the years of 1790 and 1819 they migrated
to Mississippi, and they became known as the “Western Band.” My
Great-Grandmother was born half black and half Native American Indian. Her
mother, when she was born, gave her up. At the time she was born their parents
didn’t want to raise a mixed child so they gave her up. She was sent to live
with her Grandmother. My other
culture is African American on my Dad’s side of the family. Africans were held
in the United States in 1619. Most African Americans were prisoners of war or
they were captured by Europeans and Americans. African Americans were brought
into Jamestown, Virginia. Massachusetts was the state to legalize slavery. The
Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson and he owned over
200 slaves. My grandmother on my Dad’s side of the family we was slaves. They
had lived in Mississippi. They were brought into slavery because of how racist
everybody was at the time. They would probably have to work in cotton fields or
make sugar. Also, African
Americans were segregated from the whites after they were free. African
Americans would have to wait in the back of the line in the stores. Or they
would have to sit in the back of the bus. Late on Martin Luther King Jr. tried
to stop all of the segregation in the world. He was one of the people that had
to stand up for his rights as a citizen. He was put in
jail because of his preaching. He was one of the main reasons we have our
freedom of speech. He worked day and night to get our freedom of speech.
Another person that I admire is Rosa Parks. She sat in the front of the bus
because blacks were supposed to stand for white people to sit down. She was
asked to move for a white person and she refused. If the world was still like
that I would do what Rosa Parks did refuse. When she refused she was sent to
jail. One year when
Martin Luther King Jr. was giving a speech he got shot and he died. I really
think whoever had shot him was very racist at that point in time and he was
hopefully jailed. It was horrible how someone just because he is a man of color
was murdered because he was trying to make the world a better place. That is what
my cultures are. I am a mix, and I wasn’t given up because my parents love me
for who I am. © 2010 Angie Diane♥♥Author's Note
