Chapter 2

I woke up an hour later because I remembered that Mason was coming over today. I was glad to see my little brother. It’s been a month or so since I have seen him last. Alex was about to go to work. He would be home around ten o’clock. That would give me at least a couple of hours with Mason. We needed a bonding moment. He knew I was pregnant and he knew he was going to be an uncle. He was happy that he was going to be. He would have been a while ago if Carson hadn’t died. Now that I think about Carson my eyes start to water a little.

“Aubrey, are you okay?” He asked pulling me into a hug. He gave me a kiss on the cheek. I nodded, but it’s been a long time since I have thought about Carson. All the drama that happened in the last two years has brought me down to a point. I didn’t want to be down, but losing so many people has. Carson has the biggest impact on me since he was my brother. I was glad that I had him for the first sixteen years of my life. Jonathon, he had been a good person up until what happened. I do miss him though because he did matter to me. I know things didn’t go so well between us. It’s not like I wanted him dead or anything. I just wanted him to leave me alone. Now he is gone forever. I started to tear up a little more. Alex scooped me up into his arms which always made me feel better. I calmed down and then I got up to start dinner. I wanted Alex to eat before he left for work.

“I’m alright now, honey. I was just thinking about Carson and Jonathon.”

“It’s okay, honey. You know they aren’t suffering anymore.” Alex said.

“I know they aren’t. I’m glad though.” I said with tears dripping down my face. Darn you pregnancy making me all emotional. I was in the middle of cooking baked chicken for dinner. There was a knock on the door.

“I’ll get it, Aubrey.” Alex said. He went to get the door. I put the chicken in the oven. I started a pot of rice and I made some grave to go with it. I was going to have Mason eat as well when the food was done. I know baked chicken takes a while, but Alex didn’t have to leave for another two hours or so. I know he got ready so early, but he knew he would want to fall asleep after my home cooked meal. He would sleep for another hour after eating.

“Hey kiddo, how are you today?” Alex said. I could tell he was smiling. I knew that Mason had finally arrived. My mom probably had dropped him off.

“I’m good! It smells wonderful in here!” He said with happiness. He came into the kitchen where I was and gave me a big hug. “I’m so happy to see you, Aubrey!”

“I’m happy to see you too, Mason!” I said and kissed him on the cheek. He smiled and went into the living room. He turned on the TV and waited for me to be done with what I was doing. Alex and Mason were talking about sports. I didn’t want to listen to that conversation. I didn’t like sports really except for maybe basketball. I sat down on the couch next to Mason. He and Alex were so indulged in their conversation they had forgotten I existed. I just picked up a book and read until they were ready to pay attention.

“Oh baby, I’m sorry, we forgot you were in the room.” Alex said and kissed me on the cheek. I smiled because I didn’t really mind. Guys will be guys, right?

“I don’t really mind. Alex, dinner is almost done honey. You need to take a nap soon. I will have some quality time with my little brother.” I said with a smile. I needed some time with one of my family members. I normally could talk about anything with Mason. I can talk about anything with Alex too, but I want to talk to Mason about Carson. Alex never got to meet Carson so I’m a little sad about that. I still wish he had never done what he did. What he did hurt more than what he said. Actions speak louder than words.

We sat down to eat dinner, but I didn’t eat as much as them. Men are vicious when it comes to food. I ate two pieces of chicken and a cup of rice with a little bit of gravy. The boys had a couple of pieces of chicken and way more rice than me. I wasn’t really all that hungry, but I knew I would be later. That is why I was going to have some leftovers. I was supporting two people not one. The baby was going to get a healthy dose of salad too.

I didn’t really talk through dinner. I didn’t like talking when I was eating. I thought that it was rude. Mason and Alex talked a little bit. They were talking about sports again. I just sighed and ate like a normal person.

Alex went to go take a nap. I set the guest bedroom up for Mason. We both had lots of money to afford a house. I was glad that it was more than two bedrooms. Mason was watching me do everything. He looked a little down. I gave him a hug. “What’s wrong, Mason?”

“You could have told me to help you. I don’t like to make you do all the work when you’re pregnant, sis.”

“Hey, it’s alright. You don’t have to worry about it.” I said and gave him a hug and kiss on the cheek.

An hour later Alex got up for work, he ruffled my hair, and kissed me on the cheek. “See you two, later.” And with that he walked to the car drove off and went to work. That left me and Mason to have some quality time.
