A Ballad for the NightA Poem by Heidi AlfonzoAn ode to the night
I am as a wife To the impending night Which comes for me, Knowing I’ll be ready. My hours are devoted To silence As my words bleed From my tired fingers. Errands and thoughts I strung together In a garland Of each day that passes. The road ahead stretches With its sea of possibilities, But I must wait, I suppose, And wear my sturdiest shoes, There might be stone cobbled roads, My feet mustn’t tire. Come, husband, I am ready As long as you stop courting the moon. How many times have you whispered That I am your star? Brighter and younger Than all others. I shall not unveil my face, husband, If you lie. Breezes quiet down, Sunlight dims, The long hours Of restless wrestling With dreams and demons Shall arrive shortly. The skies bless me With their bittersweet Designs at dusk, And I shall open my window, For the night To embrace me. © 2009 Heidi Alfonzo |
