A Heart in Winter

A Heart in Winter

A Poem by Heidi Alfonzo
"

about a man who couldn't bring himself to love

"

Is this how things

Are going to be?

Must I climb

Your icy tower

And beg you to come to me?

So be it!

I know what hides behind

Those tired eyes.

Your tears have frozen

Over time,

But I can melt them,

And wipe them off

Your cheeks

Tenderly, my love.

No one is that way,

No heart can carry

The weight of so much pain.

I shall believe whatever you say.

What could have caused it?

Did you sell your soul?

Is this the price you had to pay?

Look at me…

I am real…

I didn’t ask to love you either.

My life, I thought,

I had it all too clear,

But now…

I spend my nights awake,

And dream of you

And bargain with the stars

So they keep vigil by your side.

Let me in…

We shall demolish these walls together!

No more fortress of fear;

No more castle of deception.

Run free…

I shall wait…

Soon it will be springtime.
