The Space In Between

The Space In Between

A Poem by Elliott U

When you left, it was only days before I forgot you were gone. I called your phone in the middle of the night, and heard the ringing answer from where you left it behind.

Your absence became a physical presence in my life, a deafening silence in an empty room. I closed all the blinds in hope I'd see you in the dark.

I searched between every gap, up where the tree branches part just enough for the sun to warm my shoulders, and I feel you then"where my skin splits on concrete I feel you there too, and I try to forgive you.

Every scar, every hand held, every word I write, you are in the space in between.

Tonight I open the windows as the sun dims over the horizon and I see the days end no longer as a splitting gap between you and I, but as a suture. When the wind pushes back against my closing of the bedroom door, I feel you then.

I close the blinds.
