Insecurities vs apathy, one life can feel so insignificant

If there is no substance

Is it better to shiny up one’s exterior?

Or there is the easier path to consider

Let go of all effort

Be content with gently

Fading away to obscurity

Save the spotlight for those

Who matter

 

In and out of existence

The flickering light is always

Outshone by those who have

The strength to believe in something

Instead of merely floating into apathy

Staring at nothing

In the dark

I really appreciated the use of slant rhymes--they gave this poem a nice sense of unity without feeling forced. On another note, it's easy to feel unimportant or less significant when compared to others. I think it's fair to say that everyone has that kind of a mindset at one point or another, and in that way this poem can speak profoundly to a lot of people, myself included. But as Carolynn said, insecurity is just a state of mind. Social comparison is fine, and we all do it, but it becomes detrimental when you start using it do anything less than to motivate yourself. I'm a firm believer in the idea that everyone has something special and unique to offer to the world. Focus on improving yourself not for the sake of stacking up to others, but for the sake of finding what you can offer that nobody else can. You'll go a long way.

It's so easy to dream big but quite another thing to live big - I tend to stare at nothing in the dark at times but have come to accept that I am who I am and I don't have to live up to anyone's expectations but my own - insecurity is just a state of mind :)
