THE QUESTION OF KRYPTONITE.

THE QUESTION OF KRYPTONITE.

A Poem by Emunah June.

when i was a young doe
with jellied fingers
and grass-stained socks

i asked my mother
why Superman was hurt
by Kryptonite.

and with Goldfish crumbs
in brand new teeth,
i would listen while she explained.

she would say, "my dear
it's all so fiction!
but if you must know...

it drinks up any chance
of Superman absorbing the sun
and the cells within become exposed

he is no longer superhuman then.
he will simply get radiation sickness
and die."

but there is no Kryptonite
in a quiet world
shaped like Scooby Doo gummies.

she pulled me on her lap,
and kissed the horizon of my hairline
and told me not to think so much.

but now, as an adult
i see that Superman was simply
crushed by the weight
of what it means
to be
human.

It’s gentle but heavy. Poetic but accessible.
Absolutely beautiful.

What a perfect ending. Super heroes have their kryptonite....but can't handle being human...it is out of their realm. And yet humans can be super heroes in certain situations...
I am no super hero, but once helped save a guy's life. The man was working in deep hole with concrete...it collapsed on him. He was trapped against the side and could have suffocated...we knew he already had a heart condition...a couple of us immediately jumped into the hole and started tossing the concrete pieces out of the way. In normal circumstances, I couldn't have lifted those pieces if you offered me a million dollars...yet Superman, given those blocks had kryptonite...couldn't have moved them an inch. We never know what we are capable of doing, but we also are not aware of what our kryptonite is until some situation arises to show what our weakness is.
Quite a poem, quite a poem.

It means we're fragile and full of pain and want... It's "normal" so I don't do normal either. This is partly why we seek the fantastic, to escape the recognition of our suffering filled lives.. Suffering even when we are not, because we're always anxious, gathering, preparing, thinking up and looking for the greatest comfort and the best way to stave off the inevitable. Life becomes a one person extinction event just waiting to happen... So definitely not the way to go, yea?

Nicely written

This is so softly, and gently (even including radiation sickness) beautiful and meaningful, I just love it. And yes you, Emunah, more than most, you are witness to, you tend to, those crushed by the weight of what it means to be human. Sun Bear

Oh, girl, what a picture: I can clearly see you perched upon your mother's knee, goldfish crumbs and jelly smears on your dress.

Your mother sounds too grown -up, giving explanations meant for older supy fans.
But she warned you not to think about it -- and now you reap your own too-adult conclusion
that he just couldn't take being real.

A very nice, sweet piece, but I wish mom had given you a nicer, more fantastical smile that might let you hang on to the best of all the Super Heroes just a little longer.
